The Heart of the Gods

It was last November, the last week of term, and I was preparing to go home for Thanksgiving for the first time since my mom started a new life for herself. I had just woken up when a loud *knock knock* echoed through the dorm room. “Go away!” I shouted, groggy and half-asleep.

“Get out of bed!” someone yelled back. Grumbling, I rolled out of bed and dragged myself to the door, still in my pajamas.

When I opened it, my best friend Fernando Silva stood there, his shoulder-length hair as dark as night, his olive skin glowing under the corridor lights, clad in his favorite Ohio State hoodie, gray sweatpants, and red-and-black Nikes. “It’s 12 PM! Why are you still in bed?” he asked, exasperated.

“Sorry, I had the dream again,” I replied quietly, my heart sinking. His expression hardened, and I could tell he was debating whether to call me crazy.

“Come on, or we’ll be late for class,” he said, grabbing my hand, making my heart skip.

“I have to change,” I protested.

“You look fine!” he insisted.

“I know, but I might fall asleep in class,” I replied, justifying my need to at least look awake.

“Okay,” he sighed, reluctantly releasing my hand as I hurried to change.

We arrived at our Latin class nearly too late. Fernando began chatting with his other friends while I pulled out my journal, scribbling my secret thoughts. I needed to tell him that our fathers were gods—his father was Apollo, and mine was Hades. What would he think?

The bell rang, and before I knew it, Miss Love called me to the front of the classroom to share what I knew about the underworld. As I spoke, I secretly plotted how to break the news to Fernando. After class, I caught him in the hall and knew it was time.

“Fernando, we need to talk,” I said, leading him outside the bathroom, my pulse racing.

He looked at me, brows furrowing in concern. “What is it? Are you okay?”

“I need to tell you something, Nando,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “You know how we’ve never met our fathers? Well... the reason is that our fathers are gods.”

“What? You’re kidding, right?” Fernando chuckled, but his laughter quickly faded at my serious expression.

“I’m not. You’re a son of Apollo, and I’m a daughter of Hades.”

His face twisted in disbelief, and then he shouted, “Why didn’t you tell me that?!”

“I’m sorry! Please don’t leave me. I want you here with me. I know this is hard to understand,” I pleaded.

He stormed off, leaving me in tears, feeling the weight of our friendship falter like a fragile thread.

Suddenly, a loud roar broke the suffocating silence of the hallway. I sprinted towards the sound, gripping my bookmark tightly, which transformed into a dagger. Coming face to face with a griffin, I felt terror pulse through me, but I couldn’t let it have Fernando.

“Hey! Leave him alone, you oversized chicken-cat!” I yelled, surprising even myself.

The griffin turned its gaze towards me and so did Fernando, who was cornered. At that moment, my dagger became a sword. Just as the griffin charged, someone slammed into me from the side, sending me crashing against the wall.

I looked up to see a tall boy wielding a sword, fighting the griffin ferociously. He had a blue wounded warrior hoodie and blond hair styled neatly. A second boy, his identical twin, rushed up beside him, and together they coordinated a powerful strike that sent the griffin exploding into a flash of golden feathers.

“Whoa, feisty, aren’t you?” the blond boy said, walking over to help me up after the battle.

“What in the world were you thinking?” I shot back, slapping his hand away.

“Okay, okay, I was just trying to help,” he chuckled. “I’m Bren, by the way.”

“Bray!” called the second boy, helping Fernando up. “We’re twins and sons of Hermes.”

After confirming Fernando was okay but needed help, we decided we had to get him somewhere safe.

“Where?” I asked in panic.

“I know just the place,” Bren said confidently.

“No, not there! Anywhere but there,” I protested, even though I was aware of where they intended to take him.

“That’s the only place we can keep him safe from monsters,” Bray insisted.

I agreed reluctantly, and together we carried Fernando outside. My heart raced as I placed my hand over his heart—his pulse was slowing. “Quick! He’s fading!” I urged.

Bren pulled out a gold coin, dropped it on the ground, and said, “Accept my offering; we need transport.” With a flourish, a black limousine appeared, and an usher opened the door for us without question.

Once inside, the reality of our situation sank in. I watched the trees zip by the window, unsure of what would happen to us all. I felt responsible for Fernando’s injury—after all, it was my secret that had caused this chaos.

“It’s not your fault,” Bren said softly, moving closer to me.

I scooted away instinctively, but when I felt his warmth beside me, something broke inside. The comfort of connection overwhelmed me, and I let the tears flow. They left me alone for the rest of the ride as I succumbed to my anxieties.

At Athena's School for Demigods, I found my feet again, rushing to the hospital wing to see Fernando. I clutched his hand and apologized over and over, wishing I could take away the pain and fear. Bren brought us dinner and asked me about my family, revealing that he lost his mother young and had grown up in the school.

Our bond deepened, yet the distance from Fernando also weighed heavily on my heart.

“Everything will be alright,” Bren said one day as I leaned against the wall. “You have the strength to let him in, Kaya.”

But I didn’t listen. I allowed fear to trap me in silence. I watched Bren walk away, leaving me alone to question whether love was worth the risk.

Days passed in this cycle, and my heart ached with unspoken words and feelings. Meanwhile, I didn’t know Bren had begun to drift away, feeling disheartened and rejected.

Then, one day, our paths crossed again when I dropped my books in the hallway. Bren rushed over to help, and as we both reached for a novel, our hands touched. I gazed up into his piercing eyes and felt overwhelmed.

“I love you,” he whispered, and the words trembled in the air between us.

In that moment, fears faded like shadows, consumed by my yearning. “I love you too!” I blurted before retreating back to my heart’s sanctuary, overwhelmed by the depth of my emotions.

I knew I had to face my fears, but how? I turned to Fernando, who understood my struggle. With newfound courage, I returned to Bren and whispered directly into his soul, assuring him of my feelings.

Through trials and love, friendship and fear—our hearts remained entwined, carved by a golden bond that not even the gods could sever. Perhaps true bravery lies in letting others in, and as my heart opened, I found myself, finally ready for whatever came next.

As the leaves turned against the setting sun, our small world brightened anew, promising adventures on the horizon—the kind only demigods could dream of.
