The Golden Peacock’s Promise

In the heart of a vibrant jungle, where trees whispered secrets and flowers danced under the sun, lived a spirited girl named Merak. At just ten years old, she had a wild imagination and an adventurous heart, always yearning to explore the wonders around her. Each day was a new adventure among towering trees and curious animals, but nothing compared to the mysteries held deep within the jungle.

Merak lived with her father, Angsa, and her older brother, Gagak. Angsa was a wise and gentle man, spending his days tending to their small home while teaching Merak about the creatures of the jungle. Gagak, on the other hand, was a bit mischievous and loved to tease his little sister about her wild ideas. Together, they formed a bond filled with love, laughter, and a shared enthusiasm for the wonders of nature.

One bright morning, Merak set off to explore a hidden part of the jungle that her father often spoke about—the realm of the magnificent peacock. It was said that the peacock was a magical being whose feathers shimmered like gold and whose heart held the lessons of love and honesty. As Merak ventured deeper into the thicket, she heard a rustling sound and followed it, hoping the peacock would reveal itself.

After a short while, her heart raced as she stumbled upon a beautiful clearing where the sunlight kissed the ground and a grand peacock stood proudly. Its feathers were not just vibrant green and blue but glimmered like pure gold in the sunlight. The peacock, named Caranggesing, seemed to know Merak, as if he had been waiting for her arrival.

“Hello, little one,” Caranggesing said in a voice that resonated like soft music through the trees. “I have seen your kindness and courage. Will you help me with a little problem?”

Merak was delighted. “Of course! What can I do?”

Caranggesing explained that he was friends with two birds, Broto, the crow, and Warogo, the goose. They had fallen into a quarrel about fishing in the river that ran through the jungle. Their disagreement had caused sadness among the animals, and Caranggesing wanted to see them reconciled. “But I fear,” he continued, “that their friendship may be lost forever if they cannot learn to trust one another again.”

Inspired by her love for both animals and the jungle, Merak promised to help. Caranggesing instructed her to invite Broto and Warogo to the moonlit pond where they could speak and mend their friendship.

That evening, as the moon cast a silver glow across the jungle, Merak gathered both birds. At first, Broto and Warogo refused to look at each other, their feelings of hurt still raw. But Merak, with her gentle words and encouraging spirit, urged them to share their feelings and listen.

“I caught more fish than you did; I deserve it all!” squawked Broto, flapping his wings in frustration. “You always want to take the best spots!”

Warogo honked indignantly, “You never share, Broto! You snatch the fish before I can even get a bite!”

Merak listened patiently, her heart aching for her dear friends. Then, she remembered the peacock's wise words. “What if you both worked together instead?” she suggested. “There’s more than enough fish in the river for both of you. If you fish as a team, you can share and enjoy every meal together!”

As they pondered Merak's idea, Caranggesing appeared, spreading his magnificent, golden feathers. “Children,” he said with warmth, “the beauty of nature lies in unity. Help each other, and you will find joy that is far greater than any single catch.”

Slowly, both birds began to see the wisdom in Caranggesing’s words. They agreed to try fishing together the next day, promising to share whatever they caught.

However, one bright morning, as Merak watched, her heart skipping a beat, she noticed something unusual. Broto was not just fishing with Warogo; he was trying to snatch the fish for himself again! Seeing this, Merak felt betrayed, recalling Caranggesing’s lesson.

Angry and heartbroken, she shouted, “Broto! If you can’t keep your promise to Warogo, then you should become a crow again, where trust does not exist! But if you choose to be a sharing friend, then you shall flourish like a golden peacock.”

Suddenly, the skies grew dark, and Broto spread his wings to fly away—only to find his body transformed! He was no longer the sleek, black crow he was but had turned into a crow of shimmering gold feathers! The jungle gasped with awe, witnessing the punishment of betrayal.

“I didn’t mean…” mumbled the newly transformed golden crow, but it was too late.

Warogo was startled; he had seen it all happen. “Broto! Maybe becoming a golden crow was your chance to reflect on your actions. Together, we can learn.”

Realizing the wisdom in Warogo's words, the golden crow promised to embody the lesson of love and trust.

And so, with a renewed heart, Broto worked with Warogo, catching fish and sharing in the bounty of the waters. Merak smiled, proud of her friends as the jungle celebrated their unity.

Caranggesing, overseeing all, fluttered down to Merak and whispered, “With every challenge, there’s the chance to grow. Remember this, dear child, and you will shine brighter than the golden sun.”

As the jungle thrummed with life, Merak returned home, her heart full of newfound wisdom. If ever she encountered shadows of doubt or obstacles ahead, she would remember her golden promise and the lessons learned from Broto and Warogo.

From that day onward, the jungle thrived in harmony, where trust blossomed in every corner, reminding every creature that friendships built on love had the power to shine brighter than gold.
