The Great Race to the Ocean

That morning, the sun hung like a giant golden ball over the savanna. Birds were chirping, antlion traps dotted the sand, and the tall grass shimmered. Bubango stepped outside, his heart beating with excitement because he knew: today there would be great races.

The first he met was his friend Zuri the zebra. Her stripes gleamed in the morning light as if painted by an artist. “Good morning, Bubango!” she neighed cheerfully. “Your sandals look like they could carry you into the sky.”

Bubango grinned wide and tapped the sand with the stick he called his “Friendship Spear.” “Thanks, Zuri! The soles are from motorcycle tires. They make me fast, faster than the wind. Want to see who reaches the old baobab tree first?”

Zuri pawed the ground, her eyes sparkling with challenge. “Oh yes! And whoever loses has to tell the other a funny story.”

Bubango drew a line in the dirt. “This is the starting line. Ready … set … GO!” They shot forward like two bolts of lightning. The grass rustled, birds scattered into the air, and the earth trembled under Zuri’s hooves.

Bubango sprinted with all his strength, his sandals slapping the ground like little drums. “You’re fast, Bubango!” Zuri called breathlessly. “And you’re like a striped storm!” he laughed back. They leapt over rocks, dodged roots, and the path to the baobab stretched endlessly.

Zuri began to pull ahead with her long strides. Bubango’s chest burned, but he told himself: Don’t give up. Just a little farther! Just before the tree, Zuri slipped on a root and stumbled, catching herself with a laugh. “Oops! My stripe-dance!”

Bubango could have passed her easily, but he turned back. “Are you okay?” She nodded, her smile bright as the sun. “Go on, run!” With a quick nod, they charged the final stretch together. Bubango barely reached the tree first, then collapsed into the grass, gasping for air.

“That was close, Zuri! You’re amazing!” “And you truly are the lightning bolt!” she replied, giggling. Then she told her promised story: “A zebra and a bird built a nest out of stripes. But every time the wind blew, the stripes fluttered away—and the bird had to gather them all again!”

They laughed so hard that even monkeys in the baobab chuckled along. Bubango felt as light as the sun itself.

Later that day, filled with joy and friendship, Bubango learned that winning wasn’t everything. The real treasure was sharing laughter with friends and the adventures they took together, no matter where the journey led—from the savanna to the great ocean beyond.
